Truth Will Triumph
“What is truth?”
John 18:38
We all know self-willed people who won’t listen to opinions opposite to their own. When those people congregate into a mob, anything can happen.
Pilate was facing an angry mob when he asked Jesus, “What is truth?“
They were demanding that Jesus be crucified. They wouldn’t listen to Pilate when he said, “I find no basis for a charge against him.“ All they wanted was Jesus dead. They wanted their own way, no matter what the cost.
Pilate pronounced Jesus not guilty five times, and sought to release Him. The crowd wouldn’t listen to Pilate or King Herod—who also examined Jesus and found no cause to put Him to death.
In many situations today, the truth gets in the way of self-willed people. They’re not interested in the truth, they just want their own way—regardless of what’s right or wrong.
Parents grieve over wayward children who won’t listen to the voice of experience. Marriage partners want to make things better, only to be resisted by their spouse. A neighbour won’t listen to your appeal to tone down the noisy backyard parties.
On the list goes of unreasonable people we meet in life who disturb our peace and won’t discuss it.
Jesus was in was a battle for His life. Pilate and King Herod both wanted to free Him, but their efforts fell on deaf ears. Truth didn’t matter to the angry mob facing Pilate, shouting “Crucify him!”.
“Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!” (Matthew 27:23 NIV)
Why didn’t Jesus end the abuse and stop the assault on His life? It was for the sake of people like you and me. He was appointed to die for the sins of His people and so the charade had to go on. There was not one legitimate reason for Him to be accused, hence false charges had to be put forward.
In 1 Peter 3:18 we read, “For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God.” (NIV)
Jesus endured this hostility to make the way where we could come back to God. He suffered greatly. The fact is He suffered more by being forsaken by the Father than He suffered at the hands of sinners.
Do you believe that He suffered and died for you? Have you sought His forgiveness?
Ultimately, truth does matter and shall prevail in the end. Be convinced that you’re on the side of truth, the truth that’s found in Jesus.
He’s the way, the truth and the life. Only through Him can we come to the Father.
“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.“ (Romans 5:8)
