One of the most extended and beautiful portraits of our Redeemer is seen in one of the seven “I am” declarations He makes in John’s Gospel. In it He gives numerous descriptions of true believers and His actions on their behalf.
One precious statement the Good Shepherd makes is that He goes before His sheep on their journey from here to heaven. In other words, wherever life takes the sheep they can be comforted in the knowledge that the Saviour is just “a step ahead” of them.
So, when the going gets rough, we need to focus our attention on the Good Shepherd and not on the problem. For example, when someone I know is being taken into surgery, I urge them to think about the One who is just a step ahead of the gurney the orderly is pushing down the hall.
The Saviour is clearing away the obstacles that might “derail” His sheep. He is making the path ahead one His beloved sheep can endure.
May the Good Shepherd make His glorious presence known to you today and may you “endure” because you see Him Who is invisible.
More love to Thee, O Christ,
More love to Thee!
Hear Thou the prayer I make
On bended knee;
This is my earnest plea:
More love, O Christ, to Thee,
More love to Thee,
More love to Thee!
Once earthly joy I craved,
Sought peace and rest;
Now Thee alone I seek,
Give what is best;
This all my prayer shall be:
More love, O Christ, to Thee,
More love to Thee,
More love to Thee!
Then shall my latest breath
Whisper Thy praise;
This be the parting cry
My heart shall raise;
This still its prayer shall be:
More love, O Christ, to Thee,
More love to Thee,
More love to Thee!
