Forgiven Even That!

“’Come now, and let us debate your case,’ Says the Lord, ‘Though your sins are as scarlet, They shall become as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They shall be like wool.’”
Isaiah 1:18 (NASB)

As the young lady sat across my desk from me, she wept and wept bitterly. For what seemed forever she cried without saying anything. Then bit by bit she told me her story. Though raised in a Christian home she had rebelled, lived a godless life, and had several abortions. Her great desire for forgiveness was unfulfilled regardless of how much she prayed.

I pointed her to places in the Bible where we read about several exceptional promises made by the Lord offering forgiveness for great sins. I also showed her examples of the Lord forgiving gross sins when the sinner sought the Lord and turned from their wicked ways.

The story of the repentant thief on the cross, (Luke 23:43) being instantly forgiven his great sin, the publican praying for forgiveness in the temple (Luke 18:13-14) and going home justified, were shared with the grieving woman.

I took her to Psalm 51 and explained how David wrote it after his sins of adultery and murder. I suggested she might wish to use it as a model prayer for her to offer to the Lord. I urged her to look for descriptions about the Lord in Psalm 51 and to remember that the Lord is the same today as in David’s day. I assured her that just as David received forgiveness for his great sin when he confessed it, she could as well. After several days of prayer she received assurance that her sins were all forgiven. Now 30+ years later she still lives a consistent godly life.

Perhaps you were, are, or know someone who is deep in sin and wanting forgiveness. Always remember that though sin is in our nature, forgiveness is in the Lord’s nature. Our Creator is more willing to forgive our sins than we are to confess them.

If you are caught in some sin, turn to a forgiving Lord today. If you know someone caught in sin, go to them and tell them the old, old story of Jesus and His love. Do this and do it today. You will have all the grace needed from the Friend of sinners to do this. Jesus came to call sinners to repentance.
