Many of us can recall our childhood and the excitement of our birthdays and Christmas with the expectation of receiving gifts. We can recall the outstanding gifts such as a two wheel bicycle, a doll house or other item that we desperately wanted. Those times are firmly etched in our memories. Next to the special gifts, we remember with loving thoughts, the gift giver who was so thoughtful as to get exactly what you asked for.
When we read John 17, especially the part where Jesus prays for His people, it is truly remarkable how many compliments He gives them. In our verse for today Jesus tells His Father that His sheep were 1. A gift from the Father, and 2. That they were obedient to the Father’s word.
Probably you have never thought of yourself as a gift from the Father to His Son but such you are. Nor is it likely that you have thought much about how the Son describes you to His Father.
Do you not find your love for the Saviour grow because of the various ways He describes you? The Father made you a special gift to His well beloved Son. How honoured you should feel. First, for how the Son describes you and second, because you are a wonderful gift.
The world may pass you by without knowing anything about you but in the courts of heaven you are known and loved. Be thankful that your Saviour sees you as precious in His sight. You are highly honoured by your Creator.
Take a moment today to read John 17 and write down all the loving descriptions the Son makes of His people. Then spend time speaking to your Good Shepherd and telling Him of your love for Him. He longs to hear your voice. Come to Him and come now.
