God Is Everything

After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward”
Genesis 15:1 (NIV)

As the Lord speaks with His servant Abraham, He is gently urging the man of God to make God his supreme treasure.

Abraham had a wonderful promise from the Lord concerning the nation that would come through his son Isaac. However, the exceptional promise about the nation that would call Abraham "father" was not to be his primary focus.

Too often as Christians we look at the blessing and forget to consider the Blesser.

God wanted first place in the heart and mind of Abraham—as He desires in the lives of all His people.

Again and again in Scripture we find God putting Himself ahead of the blessings He brings to His children.

God repeats this important theme in Deuteronomy 10:20-21 "Fear the Lord your God and serve him. Hold fast to him and take your oaths in his name. He is the one you praise; he is your God, who performed for you those great and awesome wonders you saw with your own eyes." (NIV)

Once more we see from Scripture that the only way to handle the problems in life is to put them alongside God. That is surely the way to get things into perspective.

We so often spend a great deal of time looking at our frightening issues and forget that—in the sight of God—they are specks of dust.

A twentieth century biblical scholar, J.B. Phillips wrote a book entitled, "Your God is too small". In that book Phillips makes it clear that people in modern society find their mega problems shrink God to an inadequate deity, unable to cope with the horrendous issues of life.

What is needed is to get our eyes off the problems long enough to get a really biblical view of the immensity of God.

Once we have even a slight understanding of the God Who spoke and the universe existed, we will breathe a sigh of relief and—with the confidence born of that vision—bravely face anything life throws at us.

Listen to the Psalmist and breathe the same prayer today. "Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law." Psalm 119:18 (NIV)
