A dear friend of mine has eyeglasses he refers to as Coke bottle bottoms. By that he means the lenses of his glasses are very thick, such is his poor eyesight.

On the other hand my eyesight is good enough that I can get by without my prescription glasses if absolutely necessary. I benefit from glasses but I can read some books, drive a car, and recognize anyone I know even at a distance. My friend cannot do any of those things without his glasses.

Paul makes a curious comment when he tells his readers to fix their eyes on what is invisible. At one level Paul’s comment does not make sense. How can you see what you cannot see?

However, when you understand that Paul is speaking about the eyes of faith it makes sense. In another passage the writer to the Hebrew Christians writes: “…fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.” Hebrews 12:2

So believers are called on to—keep the invisible things of eternity, the glory that shall be ours, the One Who loved us and gave himself for us, the saints of the ages—in view as we walk in faith.

Have you fixed your eyes on what is invisible but eternal? Or do you spend your time looking at the things that do not last and which shall fade away?

The more we pay attention to our glorious future the easier it is to endure the things that shall soon disappear. Strive to have a loose grip on the things of time while holding fast to what you will never lose.

Our greatest treasure is the Saviour Himself. Read all about Him in the Gospels. Look for Him in the lives of His people. Rejoice in Him as you sing songs of praise to Him. Delight in Him as you pray and speak to Him.

Look back on your faith journey and see those times when He was especially precious as He delivered you from some sin or some spiritual enemy.

How blessed you are, Christian, that the Creator of the universe delights to have you call Him “Father”. See to it then that you fix your eyes on Him. Thus you shall have peace in your heart, songs of praise in your mouth, and joy in your mind as you take further steps toward your eternal reward.
