George Matheson (1842-1906) had a dreadful tragedy strike him as a young man.

He was engaged to be married, but was suddenly struck blind before the wedding.

His fiancé couldn't cope with the prospect of living with a blind husband and so broke off the engagement.

Undoubtedly Matheson was devastated by the loss of his beloved fiancé. He went on to become a minister of the Gospel and never married.

The loneliness and rejection he felt led him to write hymns, and one of them we still sing in some churches has the title, "Oh love that will not let me go".

Loneliness is the enemy of happiness and withers the spirit of many people who suffer from its presence.

Ask anyone who's been deserted by the love of their life, and as the tears flow they will tell you of the pain, the confusion, and the rejection that haunts them day and night.

Broken engagements, broken marriages, and broken promises of other sorts can destroy contentment and make the person bitter.

Some people never recover from the shock and devastation of the breakdown of a relationship.

The Lord wants His people to recognize that although they may suffer pain from the loss  of a loved one—for various reasons—they will never be turned aside by Him.

He's the One Who remains faithful—regardless of the problems that may arise in life.

Nothing and no one will ever sever the loved one from the heart of a faithful God.

If you, like Matheson, have endured the pain of losing someone especially dear to you, always remember that God promises never to leave you or forsake you. He's as good as His word.

With Him a promise made is a promise kept.

Today may you find this inspiring truth of a faithful God something very precious and comforting in your present lonely situation.
