There is nothing as old as yesterday's news. Yesterday's newspaper is today's garbage. We cannot imagine that there is anything of interest in the newspaper that we read with great interest yesterday. The newspaper we eagerly consumed yesterday is discarded today.
However, ask a Christian if the Bible is like yesterday's newspaper and they will insist it is not. The Bible is ever fresh. We come to it again and again—and it feeds our souls in a new way every time.
The Bible stories we have heard for many years seem to grip our attention as we read them once again. We never tire of hearing the wonderful stories about Jesus and His love for us.
Franny Crosby put it well when she wrote:
Tell me the story of Jesus,
Write on my heart every word;
Tell me the story most precious,
Sweetest that ever was heard.
What is it that makes us love to hear the familiar story of Jesus over and over through many years while the newspaper stories seem boring a day after reading them? Surely it is the fact that Jesus is the central character in all of human history. His amazing personality, His loving and gracious words, His powerful miracles that served the needs of others—all combine to hold our attention as nothing else in history ever could.
Jesus has captured the imaginations of people as no other person in all human history ever has. His selfless life, His sacrificial death, His surprising and miraculous resurrection put Him at the forefront of history. Small wonder we number our years from the year of His birth. Even non-Christians celebrate Christmas, the birthday of the Saviour.
Has this most incredible Person won your heart? Do you love to sing His worth? Are you filled with joy at the thought of Him? Do you find it impossible to stay away from church because you just want to get there and sing His praise? Is His name the sweetest name you know?
Search for Him in the Scriptures today. Read about His life among us in the Gospels. Consider just how precious He truly is and seek Him for yourself today. It is amazing, but He freely offers Himself to all who will turn to Him and take Him as their Saviour. Come to Him by way of the New Testament Gospels and read the stories of His great love and saving grace. He offers Himself to you, do not turn yourself away.
