Smitten

“Then, after three days they found Him in the temple,
sitting in the midst of the teachers,
both listening to them and asking them questions.
And all who head Him were amazed
at His understanding and His answers.’’
Luke 2:46-47 (NASB)

“And the disciples were amazed at His words.”
Mark 10:24 (NASB)

Some special individuals can enter a room full of people and command attention quickly. Their way of standing, how they walk, having a clear strong voice, and being well dressed are some of the features of those who impress and captivate most people. Do you know of such a person?

As we read the biographies of Jesus in Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, we are immediately struck by the subtle yet very commanding presence of the Good Shepherd. Yet He was easily able to gather little children around Him (Matthew 19:13-15). Few people can attract individuals across the whole spectrum of society after the manner of our Redeemer.

It is the same in all generations. Among the leading scientists of every age we find some who confess Jesus as Lord and believe He rose from the dead. Scientists like James Clerk Maxwell and Ernest Walton (Nobel Prize winner in physics) are illustrious scientists who were Christians. Among the greatest musicians of all time such as J. S. Bach, who put “in the name of Jesus” in Latin on his manuscripts, and Handel, who delighted in using Scripture to go along with his musical manuscripts. Famous poets such as George Herbert and John Milton were dedicated followers of the Lord Jesus.

On the list goes as we witness followers of the Lord Jesus from all social and intellectual levels of society openly claim Him as their Lord and their God.

There is a natural beauty concerning the Master that draws people to Him. Even the amazing Albert Einstein, who was a Jew and not a Christian, spoke with great admiration about Jesus.

If people of all segments of society across the centuries can be smitten by our Good Shepherd, should we as His followers not be equally enamoured by Him? Yes we should and we must! Marvel today, be smitten, amazed, astounded at our Lord’s impeccable character and His love for sinners. Rejoice that He seeks and finds followers from every segment of society to be His chosen people.

Today He calls on all people everywhere to come to Him, confess and forsake their sin, and follow Him. Have you retained Him as your Advocate to plead your case in the coming court of Almighty God? What makes you hesitate? Why will you not bow before Him today and receive the gift of eternal life. He waits for you to come to Him so come and come now.

“How unspeakably wonderful to know
that all our concerns are held in hands that bled for us.”

-John Newton

More love to Thee, O Christ,
More love to Thee!
Hear Thou the prayer I make
On bended knee;
This is my earnest plea:
More love, O Christ, to Thee,
More love to Thee,
More love to Thee!

Once earthly joy I craved,
Sought peace and rest;
Now Thee alone I seek,
Give what is best;
This all my prayer shall be:
More love, O Christ, to Thee,
More love to Thee,
More love to Thee!

Then shall my latest breath
Whisper Thy praise;
This be the parting cry
My heart shall raise;
This still its prayer shall be:
More love, O Christ, to Thee,
More love to Thee,
More love to Thee!
