One of life’s most beautiful scenes is to observe a mother cradling her newborn child in her arms after nursing it and singing the baby to sleep. The infant, held close to the mother’s heart, is calm as it senses the familiar heartbeat and voice. What security the child feels as it relaxes and goes to sleep surrounded by maternal comfort.
Our verse for today describes the Christian’s relationship to the Lord under four headings. First, we are told He is with us. Second, He is our Saviour. Third, He delights greatly in us. Fourth, He breaks out in joyful singing in our presence.
Such a set of responses by the Lord to His people is a tremendously powerful scene for the child of God to view. It is overwhelming to imagine that we can evoke such a remarkable set of actions by our Father in heaven when He sees us.
The fourth of the Lord’s responses tells us that God sings joyfully over His people. The largest book of the Bible is the Psalms, the Hebrew hymnbook. Music is a very important subject in Scripture and has been a treasured form of worship by the Lord’s people throughout history. Our emotions are summoned as powerful music fills the air. Who can resist the dramatic sounds of Handel’s great oratorio The Messiah?
Yet, for all the forms of music that the Holy Spirit inspired musicians to incorporate into the Bible, the singing of our God over His people excels them all. I know Scripture includes many forms of music for various experiences of God’s children but can any of it excel the music of our Great God as He sings over you and me?
May your spirits be lifted today as you meditate on your great God singing at the sight of you right where you are. He delights in you, He rejoices in you, He sings over you. Can you question His great and abiding love for you after reflecting on these things? Sing today in your heart and make melody to the Lord. Rejoice in your God today as He joyfully sings over you!
