The Guessing Game

Abraham replied, “I said to myself, ‘There is surely no fear of God in this place, and they will kill me because of my wife.’
Genesis 20:11 (NIV)

One of the tricks Satan delights to work against God's people is to get us imagining the worst possible outcome of a situation.

This is what happened to Abraham as he journeyed through foreign countries.

Sarah, Abraham's wife, was a beautiful woman. As Abraham moved through strange lands he became fearful of what might happen to him when lustful men saw her. He was afraid he might be killed by someone who wanted Sarah for his wife.

This fear of what was possibly going to happen caused him to lie and have Sarah lie and say Abraham was her brother and not her husband.

So Abraham acted not on what was actually happening in his life but on the basis of what might happen.

God wants us to trust Him in the actual situations in life and not be concerned about what might or might not happen another day.

Much joy and peace in life is stolen from us by thoughts of what may occur in the future.

This is why our Lord said, Matthew 6:34 "Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." (NIV)

So we're to ignore Satan's efforts to get us worrying about what could happen down the road. We're to focus on what is happening to us today.

Each day we live has enough issues for us to deal with. Therefore we are not to rob ourselves of today's peace by wondering what tragedy might possibly be coming tomorrow.

Work diligently to take life one day at a time, and be effective in living a holy life in the real situation before you right now.

Always remember that we are promised strength for the day we are living (Deuteronomy 33:25).

God never told us He would give us grace for a problem that is not real.

Imagined difficulties will certainly frighten us if we let them. This was what caused Abraham to lie about his relationship to Sarah.

Let God deal with tomorrow and what might happen. You go in His strength and deal with what is actually in front of you right now, today.
