Rejoice in The Lord Always

“Whenever I pray, I make my requests for all of you with joy, for you have been my partners in spreading the Good News about Christ...”
Philippians 1:4-5 (NLT)

In today's verse, Paul is in a Roman prison, writing to the church he established in Philippi. He recalls the time he spent with them and how thankful he was for the Christians there. He also talks about how they should conduct themselves in this evil world.

What is it about the church in Philippi that was such a joy to Paul? It takes the rest of the letter to see all that is good about this fellowship of faith.

Paul knows that “...whether I come and see you again or only hear about you, I will know that you are standing together with one spirit and one purpose, fighting together for the faith, which is the Good News.“ (Philippians 1:27 NLT)

He reminds them to imitate Jesus when he says, “Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.“ And to “Do everything without complaining and arguing, so that no one can criticize you. Live clean, innocent lives as children of God, shining like bright lights in a world full of crooked and perverse people.“ (Philippians 2:3-4; 14-15 NLT)

Take the difficulties you have in life, as Paul did, and dedicate them to God.

Dear brothers and sisters, pattern your lives after mine, and learn from those who follow our example. For I have told you often before, and I say it again with tears in my eyes, that there are many whose conduct shows they are really enemies of the cross of Christ.“ (Philippians 3:17-18 NLT)

Use your experience to influence others to seek the Lord. Your voice will come across with an authority that others lack.

Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again—rejoice! Let everyone see that you are considerate in all you do. Remember, the Lord is coming soon.“ (Philippians 4:4-7 NLT)

Get busy exalting the Lord from where you are and you (and those around you), shall be blessed.

“The whole atmosphere of this Epistle is that of joy; and the believer, in whatever earthly circumstances he may be placed, should manifest the joy of the Lord. Paul sends forth from the Roman prison a triumphant song of faith and holy joy, just as he did years before in the Philippian prison. There is not a word of murmur or complaint. He counts it all joy and glories in tribulation. He has Christ; he knows Christ; Christ is his all; he knows himself to be in His hands and the glorious goal is ever before him; and the Holy Spirit therefore fills him with joy. Such should be the experience of every believer.“ Henry 'Harry' Ironside
