War With God

“Indeed, I know that this is true. But how can mere mortals prove their innocence before God? Though they wished to dispute with him, they could not answer him one time out of a thousand. His wisdom is profound, his power is vast. Who has resisted him and come out unscathed?”
Job 9:2-4 (NIV)

In my childhood I was a schoolyard bully.

I loved scrapping with anyone who displeased me in any manner whatever. I didn't always win the scraps but I always sought to make the victor walk away limping. That way anyone who did get the best of me would think twice before another engagement of fists with myself.

My love for fist-fighting tapered off in my teenage years and ceased altogether when I became a Christian at about 18 years of age.

I learned to love peace instead of war.

It's ridiculous for an army armed with only water guns to go to war with the U.S.A. with all of its amazing arsenal of fighter jets, bombers, nuclear weapons and millions of soldiers, marines, and air force personnel.

Yet that analogy fits perfectly the picture of people going to war with Almighty God.

Here is one reason why some intelligent people seek to prove there is no God.

They know very well that if there really is a God they must bow their knee to Him and submit to His authority. So, instead of looking foolish fighting against Almighty God with water pistols, they deny His existence altogether.

Our verses today make it very clear that no one can win in a fight with God.

Far better to lay down our puny weapons of war against Him and surrender before we rouse His anger.

It doesn't require any great intelligence to understand that we need to seek peace with God on any terms He offers.

We're in no position to negotiate a peace treaty with God.

Nor are we in any position to deny God's existence when we understand the incredibly complex world around us. That also sounds very foolish.

So, we're left with the only intelligent option, and that is to surrender ourselves to the authority and will of the God Who made us.

He gives us the invitation through Jesus the Saviour, in Matthew 11:28-30 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (NIV)

Come to Him and come today.
