What are you hearing?

“So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.”
Romans 10:17 (ESV)

In the west there are many voices vying for our attention. We can't look anywhere without our eyes falling upon some form of distraction. Magazines, television shows, YouTube, Facebook, and other intrusions invade our daily lives.

Such useless information won't get us a job, help us solve our problems, or show us how to be better citizens. Yet we're constantly bombarded and tempted to digest it all as if it was crucial to our existence. While a certain amount of entertainment is fine, too much can poison our lives.

Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.” Ephesians 5:15-17

Understanding the Lord's will comes from reading the Bible. The Bible uplifts us and provides us with what we need to know to live well, to be ready for the coming judgment, and for life eternal.

Every word of God is flawless; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.” (Proverbs 30:5 NIV)

The Bible tells us about the character of God and reveals his ultimate plan for us. It keeps us from sin and helps us to renew our minds. Its words give us courage to continue when we wonder how we can. It shows us that no matter what's going on in the world, God is in control.

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God a may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17 NIV)

Yes, reading the Bible can be difficult at times, but if you're persistent, you'll find precious gems throughout.

If you haven't been reading it or you've gotten away from it, start off by reading a chapter of John. Repeat the following day. Ask God to help you understand what He's trying to tell you.

If you miss a day or two, pick it back up and keep going. Whatever you do, don't stop. Make it a habit you refuse to give up. You won't regret listening to the words of your Creator. It's like sitting at the feet of Jesus while He's talking directly to you.

“I prayed for Faith, and thought that some day Faith would come down and strike me like lightning. But Faith did not seem to come. One day I read in the tenth chapter of Romans, 'Now Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God'. I had closed my Bible, and prayed for Faith. I now opened my Bible, and began to study, and Faith has been growing ever since.” Dwight L. Moody
