In the context of today's verse, Jesus is in the hands of the Jewish and Roman leaders.
Jesus has now finished the work His Father gave Him, and is committing His spirit back into the hands of His Father, where it will be safe once again.
He allowed the hands of the wicked to take Him and crucify Him. He submitted to death, and took the sins of the world upon Himself. This was the will of the Father for Him.
“This was the one payment of our debts that God would accept; this was the great sacrifice on which our eternal life depended. If Christ had not gone to the cross and suffered in our stead, the just for the unjust, there would not have been a spark of hope for us; there would have been a mighty gulf between ourselves and God, which no man ever could have passed. The cross was necessary, in order that there might be an atonement for sin.” J.C. Ryle
If we believe and trust in Him, then we'll be saved. Otherwise, we're without hope. “I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am he, you will indeed die in your sins.” (John 8:24 NIV)
In the 1920s, a visiting Welsh preacher was on a speaking tour of Michigan. During his visit he borrowed a model T Ford to drive to a meeting. The car broke down and all he could do was hope some motorist would come to his aid.
Someone did. The motorist had the preacher describe what happened. After listening, the good Samaritan assured the preacher the car would be fixed in no time. Sure enough, the man was as good as his word. He soon flipped the crank at the front of the car and the engine purred to life.
The preacher shook his new friend’s hand and asked for his name. The man stood tall and proud and said, “My name, sir, is Henry T. Ford.” As the maker of the car, he knew how it was made and how to fix it.
If our lives are going to get back on track (and be what they should be), then we must get into the hands of our Maker.
Every day we should humbly come to Him in prayer. He's more than able (and willing) to help with our concerns.
“Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.” (1 Peter 5:6 NIV)
Whose hands are you in today? Your own or your Maker’s?
